When I was in high school I thought it was weird when teachers joined social networks, but in college it's completely different. When I barely saw my professors twice a week it was nice to communicate with them by looking at their sites. It made me see that they were people too, not just professors. Regardless of your intentions, parents could (and eventually will) misconstrue your best efforts as something inappropriate. It's always best to play it safe.
