I'm currently a college student and I think it's great to see my professors blog or have a facebook. When I was in high school I thought it was weird when teachers joined social networks, but in college it's completely different. When I barely saw my professors twice a week it was nice to communicate with them by looking at their sites. It made me see that they were people too, not just professors.

I don't have current students, but former students as friends. Regardless of your intentions, parents could (and eventually will) misconstrue your best efforts as something inappropriate. It's always best to play it safe.
